Licences remain valid indefinitely unless suspended, surrendered, or cancelled, simplifying compliance for food businesses. An annual fee must still be paid to maintain active status. Key Aspects of Perpetual FSSAI Licenses: No Expiry/Renewal: The previous 1–5 year renewal cycle is abolished, replacing it with a continuous licence. Mandatory Annual Fee: While renewal is gone, food business operators (FBOs) must pay an annual fee to keep the license active, as failure to pay will lead to suspension, notes increased Thresholds: The turnover limit for basic registration has been raised, benefiting smaller businesses. Surrender & Closure: If a business closes, the FBO must inform the authority within 30 days and surrender the license. Risk-Based Inspection: The change enables a shift towards technology-enabled, risk-based inspections. Transitional Arrangement: Licenses that expired before March 31, 2026, needed to be renewed under the old system.
